Just got done reading the below article. Telsa is planning on charging 3,000 dollars for the option for your car to be eventually have the ability to drive itself.

This feature is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary by jurisdiction.

^ quote from the article

What is Tesla’s plan here? Cash in on early adopters? This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. People would walk out of showrooms laughing if their BMW/Merc/Audi salesman said “well sir, your car doesn’t have [insert capability here] now, BUT it will in the future. Just sign here” But Tesla does it and its [buzzword].

The hardware exists, but the software will require years of testing before it’s operational.

Right, I get that, but aren’t they basically asking their customers to gamble $3,000 on the hope that the self driving car software finishes testing and regulation gets passed before they dump this car and get a new one?

It’s no different than buying a tesla 3 in general. You are anticipating there will be a company around in 5 years and this venture won’t bankrupt the company. It’s a risk many buyers are willing to take.

I don’t know a lot about corporate business, so forgive me if I ask; Is Tesla really at risk of going belly up at this point? Is investor confidence really that over-inflated?

I don’t think the $3000 is a good investment now. Wait until autopilot is finished, then buy another Tesla.

My thoughts exactly. Unless I hear a compelling reason otherwise this is no different to me than the $1,000 dollar pre-order. Just a fundraiser

Except this is worse. Its 3x the money on something that seems 3000x less likely to materialize (within the average length of ownership).

Thats what I’m getting at. Its an investment. A bad one it seems.

If they don’t manage to fulfill a good percentage of Model 3 orders before people start asking for refunds on their deposits, that’s not a good sign. The next year is critical for them, especially for production and maintaining good PR/perception.

$3000 now or $?,000 to retrofit? If even possible.

I wouldn’t bet that they could fulfill it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they surpassed met expectations. Tesla has a habit of doing that. And there’s a lot of trendy hype surrounding Tesla that I could see most people letting Tesla keep their deposits interest free loans.

And to be honest I want Tesla to succeed. No one else is doing what they’re doing and competition is good for everyone.

All Model 3s come with the hardware for autopilot. You are paying $3k for them to enable the software.

I think it will sell just on bragging rights. Kind of like the pre-order.

Not the worst idea though, this brand seems to attract Prius drivers who blindly fell into a pile of money - not the most”with it”.

I wasn’t sure, but that sort of stuff pisses me off. Just like when my kid’s playing Skylanders and he can’t go into a certain area of the game without a certain (extra cost) character. What a racket... When I was a kid, when you bought a game, you got THE WHOLE GAME.

Hopefully someone breaks the encryption and makes it so Tesla owners can activate it for free (or much cheaper).

My truck has lane departure warning, radar adaptive cruise control, collision detection, etc.

If I was offered a way to future proof myself and receive an autonomous “update” down the line, I would’ve strongly considered it. In fact I’d pay $1000 right now if I had the option.

It’ll be possible, I’d guess for $5000.

Of course, you could invest the $3000 and get a fair bit closer to the $5000, without assuming the risk that Tesla won’t be able to give you $3000 of value.

Or, alternately, they’re people who moved downmarket to the Prius - the Model S and X let them move back into their usual market.

I might’ve misread the article I read where this was mentioned, but I thought it was a $3,000 option you could enable in the future, via an over the air update.

Meaning, at some point in the future when self-driving is functional and legal, you can then pay Tesla $3,000 and they’ll push the software to your car via an over the air update since the hardware was installed when it was built.

If the Model 3 fails to sell goals and falls flat, they will fail. In simple terms, Tesla can’t handle an Edsel like failure.

I’m definitely not sure - I went out to the Tesla forum and they seem to agree with what you originally posted as correct. I definitely wouldn’t option it if that’s the case!

I get that. I really get that. But how long are you intending to keep your truck? Since your truck seems to be for work I’d say you keep it for longer than average, but since average length of new car ownership is 6.5 years in the USA, I doubt fully autonomous abilities will be ready inside of that (sure the software will probably be ready, but I seriously doubt the regulation will be). Thats what I was commenting on. If they’re asking people to pay up front for tech their car may never see inside of their length of ownership then whats the point except for marketing and fundraising? I also drew the comparison to their luxury competitors because such a stunt would be seen as ridiculous by their buyers.

IF you can upgrade to it in the future then I get it, the price is very steep but new tech is very seldom cheap.

However, if its an option you have to order; thats where I get lost. It just seems like a marketing and fundraising exercise to me. Sure your car might get fully autonomous capabilities one day, but the next owner or the one after will probably be enjoying those features as you will most likely have already upgraded.

It’s been impressive what they (and SpaceX) have been able to do so far. Definitely agree in hoping that they succeed long term, and on merit, not hype.

It’s not that they are in dire straights, it’s that future growth and stability requires them to go down market. They’ve put everything on the line with the 3.

Are you sure? While that’s easier to justify on a more expensive car like the S or X, it seems like too big of a gamble to install the hardware in all the cars when not all of them will end up enabled. The $35000 would have a significant loss built in, more so than a is already likely necessary.

The $3000 cost would also make a lot more sense if it covers the cost of the sensor/camera hardware as well as the autopilot software, which they are now promising will eventually be capable of full autonomy.

As far as I am aware all cars have all the hardware to simplify production.
